Whole Heart, Whole Horse – Mark Rashid
This is a book to move your soul. I can not speak highly enough of Mark Rashid as an author. I have read three of his books now and they are well written with lessons to learn interwoven into the fantastic stories. I don’t want to give too much away but his life growing up and his early years with the old man and the horses is mesmerizing.
Mark has a way with words but more than that he comes across as a gentle, kind trainer with an anecdote to highlight the point his is trying to make.
One of his other book which I have recently finished is called A Good Horse is Never a Bad Colour and it is equally insightful. Mark’s books are for the thinking horse lover and while you can get the e-book version I think for a present a lovely gift wrapped book is hard to go past.
You really can’t go wrong with any of Mark’s books as a gift for the horsey person in your life, they will love them.
Available in a huge range of colours including black, white, gorgeous blue, pink and tan this bracelet is a great cheaper option which is sure to please horse lovers from little girls to grown women. Who doesn’t like to have something pretty to remind us of our love for our equine pals?
Made from synthetic leather with some velvet wrapping this is such a pretty bracelet. It is a great price but doesn’t look cheap and nasty.
A good choice for Kris Kringle around the office if you get a horse lover and are limited to a gift for under $10 like we do.
If your not sure what Kris Kringle is it’s when a group of friends or colleagues randomly choose a name and have to buy a present for that person. You can’t tell anyone who you have chosen and usually there is a price range set so everyone receives a gift of about the same value.
We do it each year at work, with a morning tea put on where we all exchange gifts together and it really is a bit of fun, especially when the price limit is set low so no-one is stretched financially. Why not introduce it at your work place or with a group of friends this year, it adds a bit of festive cheer and gets everyone into the spirit of Christmas.
Horse Head Pendant
I just love the elegance of this Stirling silver pendant. The two horse heads are said to represent the mother and child so a beautiful gift for the horse loving mums out there. The Chinese references are the Mother: XinXin who you can snuggle up to and the Child: Xiang Wei the two who rely on each other through their heart.
The Sterling silver necklace is plated in Rhodium which is hard and resistant to corrosion so should last a long time. The Rhodium will help reduce scratches and tarnishing to keep your pendant and necklace looking good for longer.
To be honest I find the necklaces that go with these pendants are often fairly thin so if you need a more robust chain you might need to check out your local jewellery store for an alternate necklace. Or maybe it’s just me that’s hard on these types of chains cause I seem to break them a lot!
Kendal Jewellery Box
If you already have a collection of jewellery this storage box looks fantastic. Available in black or brown leather finish to suit most dressers, the lines are clean and sleek without any bling. I love the contract between the black leather, the creamy coloured inside and the shiny handles – very tasteful!
This is a sturdy jewellery box for the serious collector standing at just over 32cm high, 30cm long and 17cm deep. With dedicated compartments in each draw for necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings you will be able to see and find all your treasures in the one place.
I don’t know about you but I find I wear the same earrings day in and day out because I just can’t be bothered taking the time to looking through the mess that is my jewellery box. This looks like it’d do a fine job of organising and keeping everything within reach with the swing out sides plus the top compartment and a further 5 draws underneath.
You can also close it up and it has a sturdy handle for carting it around. Comes with a one-year warranty and the Kendal Jewellry Box gets a 4 1/2 star review on Amazon.
Stanley 4 in 1 Mobile Workstation
Yep it’s a toolbox but don’t be concerned, this is the best thing since sliced bread for horse owners. Believe me I have one and I wouldn’t be without it. The Mobile Workstation makes a fantastic grooming box either for all your show products or as an everyday grooming station.
I have my show gear in mine and the compartments are fantastic for keeping everything organised. I am not usually a “place for everything and everything in its place” type of person – some might call me disorganised. But when it comes to show day the last thing you want is to be frantically looking for white makeup for your horses blaze when your already running late for your first class. I speak from experience this is a nightmare!
I have all my plaiting tools in the top because the toolbox is quite high. So when I’m plating up I have it close handy with all my plaiting bands, spray, needle and threat, small scissors etc. and it’s right there handy.
I use the second tray for all my horse makeup. You can slot the dividers in anywhere you choose so great for segregating coloured makeup, hoof black and the paint brush to go with it, all the small foam applicators and cloths for applying. I find this way I am not getting bay makeup mixed into the white touch up or hoof black all over the outside of the makeup pots.
In the deeper bottom draw I store shampoos, conditions, coat shine spray, all those products that come in much larger containers. I never bother to decant cleaning products to take them to show so it’s just easier to leave the big bottles in the bottom. There’s heaps of room even for spray bottles and heavier items.
The wheels make it so portable. While they are not exactly off-road tyres I have wheeled mine across some pretty uneven terrain and it is easy to pull and doesn’t unbalance.
The toolbox isn’t completely sealed but I haven’t found that to be a problem. My tack room, where I store mine year round, is quite dusty and open to the elements, so once a year I take everything out of the toolbox give it a wipe over and the inside of the draws and it’s good to go again. If you have a more enclosed tack room (or don’t live on the edge of the desert) it wouldn’t be an issue at all.
All in all this is a great buy, so practical and I think I have just talked myself into buying a second one for my everyday grooming tools and I’ll leave it at the back of my stables so it’s close and handy.
Treats & Toys
Horseman’s Pride knows horses. They produce the Jolly range of horse treats and balls and I have been using their stall snacks for 5 years now and they are as indestructible a treat as you will find anywhere for horses.
My geldings absolutely love the molasses flavour stall treats but they do come in a great range of flavours including apple, carrot and mint and they have a salt lick too.
The treat holder is reusable, you simply unscrew the top and bottom and thread a new treat over the rod and secure it all back in place. It’s super quick and easy to do.
Jolly Stall Snack Combo
I love the look of the Jolly Stall Snack Combo, with the apple flavoured ball hanging underneath. Being an extrovert and quite playful I reckon my Jonny would think that was a great toy and get hours of fun out of it.
Just keep in mind the treat part (at the top) isn’t included when you buy the assembly, so you might want to add a treat to your shopping basket so your gift recipient can use it with their horse right away.
You can buy the treat refills (image above) so you can try all the different flavours fairly cheaply and see which one your horse likes best.
I also have the 10″Jolly Ball for Jon. This one was a hit for about a week and then only played with occassionally. Not sure why the novelty wore off, but even when I throw it around for him he only shows interest for a little while these days.
It’s once again super hardy and even after 18 months of lying around in his yard with a wash it would look as good as new.
You don’t need air to inflate it, mine has stayed perfectly round even after all this time. It is also puncture resistant and there are no bite marks showing in mine at all even though it got a good mauling to start with. Comes in a fun range of colours too.
All in all these are good quality products from Horseman’s Pride. Choose from one of the tasty treats or fun toys at a price that won’t break the bank. Good stocking fillers for horse owners that’s for sure.
What I want in my Christmas stocking
Apple Watch Series 4
Drool! My most wished for Christmas present this year. This is one of those presents you probably won’t buy for yourself but if you have a loved one who is feeling flushed with cash you might just get lucky this Christmas.
This is my number one pick purely for the Fall Alert function which is now available in the Series 4.
Through some nifty internal gadgets called the accelerometer and an improved gyroscope the watch detects if you have had a fall. The screen will display options for you to call emergency services or dismiss the alert if you are OK. But if you do not acknowledge the screen after 60 seconds, say your unconscious, then an emergency call will be placed and a message sent to the person/people you have chosen.
You do need the cellular option to really make use of these cool features. By going cellular you don’t need to carry your phone for the Emergency SOS to work all you need is your watch.
So how does that work? If you don’t acknowledge the fall alert your phone will activate the Emergency SOS and ring 000, so you get help as quickly as possible. But not only that your watch sends your current location, so no matter where you are riding, the emergency services guys and gals will be able to find you.
How’s that for the best safety feature ever for horse people. I absolutely love it and if I don’t find an Apple Watch under my tree this Christmas I’ll be splashing out and buying one for myself in the New Year.
Imagine having that peace of mind knowing if you come off your horse, or get knocked to the ground, your watch will notify people to come and find and help you!
Plus if you go the cellular option you can leave your mobile at the stables, no more carrying around the extra weight or worrying that you might damage your phone while your out riding or playing with your horse. You don’t even need your phone to play music or make a call it can all happen with your watch.
The Health App also tracks and keeps all your health and exercise info in the one handy spot. Want to know how many calories your ride has burnt – your watch can tell you. Covering the 4 key health areas your watch will help you keep track across the areas of Activity, Sleep, Mindfulness and Nutrition.
After scouring the internet I’ve found what I think is the cheapest option for not only the Series 4 but the Series 3 as well. Just remember the Series 3 does not have fall alert so if that’s one of your must have features you need the Series 4.
Check out the links for a great bargain on this pretty new technology. There seems to be fairly limited stock at good prices so if you are considering buying, you will want to get in soon and get yourself or your horse riding loved one a brilliant gift.
A few added extras
But wait there’s more. Haven’t seen anything you like? I have done some thorough reviews of a few of the horse products I can’t live without and some Best Of Reviews over the past 12 months. Any of these would make great horsey Christmas presents as well. You can check them out here:
Donate to Charity
Another brilliant option is to donate to a charity on behalf of your gift receiver if you feel that is something they would like to do rather than receive a gift themselves. I include this here because many horse people are also givers and perhaps you have that person who really doesn’t need anything else (I know apparently they do exist!).
One of our very worthwhile charities here in Australia is The Salvation Army (affectionately know as The Salvos). They provide relief to families in need and run a wonderful Christmas donation scheme where you can donate as little as $5 to provide a cup of soup to a homeless person or if you can stretch to a little more you can give a family in need a wonderful day out for $82. They also have everything in between including providing a gift for a child this Christmas, providing a ticket for public transport or a Christmas Food Hamper for a family doing it tough.
Once you get to the checkout you can make the donation on behalf of your horse lover. Check out the good works of The Salvos by clicking here.
Give a gift they will love this year
I hope this has made it easier and given you some ideas of what you could get for your horsey family member, loved one or friend this Christmas. Horses are our passion and honestly anything to do with horses will bring a smile to their face. It doesn’t need to be expensive and the thought you have put into researching your gift will be much appreciated.
If you are the horsey person – Do you have a horse related present you are hoping to get this year? Share your wish list in the comment box below and it might help give others some extra ideas too.
I hope you all get exactly what you are after under the Christmas tree this year and remember to give your horse an extra special treat on Christmas Day.
And just for a bit of light-hearted relief from all that shopping if you haven’t seen the viral clip of Ross and his naughty pony Ed check this out for a giggle:
Merry Christmas to you all.
